I have been working for 2 years now in Cruise Ferries and I have to say that I love my job. I started as a kitchen assistant and now I am in charge of customer service.
When I first started I was really scared that this job wasn’t going to be for me. It was the first time that I was going to be away from home and I thought I wasn’t going to resist that experience. In fact I cried when I was at the airport but that only the beginning of my adventure.
The ship was huge and I was really excited that I was going to be working inside. I remember that my English was not excellent but wasn’t that bad either. Now, 2 years after, my English has improved a lot and I can communicate more fluently with customers.
My first payment was all spent on electronics. I remember going out of the ship in the first stop and getting very excited about being in a foreign country. All I could think at that moment was to return home because I was missing them so much that I bought present for everyone. This job lets you save a lot of money if you know how to control yourself.
The food that we are given is free and is first class. I have actually put some weight because you can literally eat as much as you can. You don’t have to pay for accommodation either. I first shared my room with who is now my best friend. The rooms are very comfortable. When you are tired after a long day of work you don’t really care how big is you room because you only want to sleep!
Little by little I started to get better job offers. You can go on a cruise for a minimum of 6 months and every 6 months you have to renew your contract. Thanks to some very kind customers who left very good feedback about me I got offered my second job. It meant more money and more responsibilities too.
The best parts are all the anecdotes that you get to collect while you work in a ship. There are many parties only for workers so you can imagine how many nights I have seen drunk people doing silly things or how many couples I have seen get together and also split up. In one year time I’m going to stop travelling because it is time for me to settle down somewhere. Now it feels weird to think about living in a house and having to take a bus or walk to a place. I’m so used to the ship.
